IS THERE A GENETIC LINK WITH FIBROMYALGIA?…

There has been known facts that Fibromyalgia runs in families. It can lie dormant in a person’s body until a traumatic event triggers it off.

Recent research has suggested that it would appear that there is a genetic component.

The disorder is often seen in families, among siblings . Many mothers and daughters fall foul of the condition shortly after they have given birth to their first child.

For more information have a look on the Fibromyalgia aware website http://www.fmaware.org

  1. It can run in families, but no-one is really sure how, or what genes are involved. It can be triggered by trauma but certainly in not all cases. I have FM but it just came on slowly, I have never had anything happen that could be called a trauma. However, some of my family members, over 4 possibly 5 generations have shown either signs of FM or related conditions, or in later life, arthritis

    • My Mum used to suffer very very badly with Fibrocitis as they called it in her day and as a youngster I also suffered from it which I guess was the start of my FIbromyalgia. Mum died very young (53) or heart problems so I don’t know about the arthritis and unfortunately down the line the rest of the family died young so arthritis has not been mentioned.
