CHRONIC PAIN…NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP…

Never give up

My friend gave me this tile some years ago which I have propped up in the downstairs toilet. Whenever I go through a bad patch (like I am at the moment) I look at it and repeat the words like saying my mantra. There is definitely something in saying mantra’s that keep you on the straight and narrow. I know some people say them often but for me it’s when I’m bad that I find they can help me.

Everyone deals with chronic pain in their own way but if you are struggling on your own there are people and support groups available to help you through it. My blogging is one of my ways that I deal with my pain. Writing down how I feel instead of constantly telling people how I feel seems easier and the lovely comments of support that come back after writing it, give me a real boost.

Other people suffering from chronic pain may, when they go through a bad patch, just want to rest and stay at home and not socialise until it has eased.. Other’s may find support groups a blessing in disguise being amongst others in a similar situation. At the end of the day everyone has their own way of dealing with pain. One excellent online support group which I have been a member of for some time is http://www.painsupport.co.uk/ and another http://www.self-help.org.uk/directory/pain/ has over 1000 self help organisations listed.

Some friends and family can be amazing and pull you through every time you go through a bad patch. Others, can be quite sarcastic about the fact that you are still attending a certain event or going on holiday when you are ‘supposed’ to be in so much pain. I have certainly experienced this but I certainly do not feel that you need to explain how and what you do to help you deal with chronic pain, especially to someone who has been lucky enough in their health that they have only had a simple ‘headache’ to deal with.

I hope this post may help someone who is suffering with pain and help them not feel alone while dealing with it.

  1. That’s what Winston Churchill said at the height of the Battle of Britain, I think. It’s helped me a lot in my time! ‘Never give up. Never, never, never, never, never give in to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.’ I love that ‘apparently’ – it means that although they may have the upper hand at the present – like your pain – in the end you will win through!

    1. Well put gilly, I can’t let it get on top of me as I have one heck of a life to get through yet so I just can’t give up. It’s quite good that I put it in the loo as every time I go to spend a penny, it reminds me :):)

  3. Vicodin is a painkiller that brings relief to those in need. Analgesics are recommended by doctors globally as the remedy for treating pain; which is the most common ailment today! Vicodin is one of the highly available and accepted medicines for curing pains. It is very effective in reducing modest to chronic pains and also relaxes the mind, creating a sense of well being.

      1. Vicodin is hydrocodone/paracetamol AKA hydrocodone/acetaminophen. It has two names joined by slashes because it’s two tablets combined.

I think Vicodin is a brand name, maybe you know it under one of the above instead 🙂

      2. Forgot to mention!

There is also Vicodan which is just Hydrocodone. It’s also used for pain.

I imagine Vicodin and Vicodan get confused all the time 🙂

      3. Forgot to thank you houseguy for all you input for this post and your knowledge of the different types of drugs for pain. I have no idea how you manage to remember the names of them all, I forget the names of mine and I take them daily :):)

  4. That is a great tile to have on hand. It helps to remind ourselves that others suffer too I find. Support groups are brilliant for all sorts of things and are everywhere. You are so good at passing on info to help others even when you are in constant pain yourself x

  5. Hey Barmac – Just came across your excellent blog as part of my research into back pain for a customer of ours (we are a design company). As a back pain sufferer too, I understand the never give up mantra. Back pain starts in the back but develops in the mind. The solution is the reverse. Solve it in your mind first then the back.

My good friend Nick teaches this to pro rugby players for a job, then wrote a book about it which we did the design on. May give you a different perspective on it: Now I Can Bend My Back! – http://www.backpaincompany.com. Plus its a cool looking book!
