Apparently its official, massage does help treat low back pain.
A recent research showed massage can provide pain relief and improve daily life.
A study in America randomly assigned 400 adult patients with moderate to severe low back pain to either a weekly whole body massage for relaxation, and/or a weekly massage that focused on specific muscles problems around the lower back and hips.
After ten weeks the participants in both massage groups reported greater average improvement in pain and functioning, compared to those in the usual care group.
Any type of massage seemed to work, and for most the improvement was felt it in lower back http://www.webmd.com/backpain.
