DIY low back exercises

A physiotherapist has put her 30 years of back treatment expertise into an Apple App that is specifically aimed at preventing and easing lower back pain.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, back pain is the second most cited reason for absence from work in the UK and it is estimated that 80 per cent of people will suffer from the condition at some point during their lives.

Katie Copeland, a Chartered Physiotherapist with her own successful Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic in Chester, has developed an App with Chester University to help people fight lower backache but only once it has been correctly diagnosed.

The DIY Physio Lower Back App provides simple advice and video instruction for a select number of home exercises that Katie’s clients – who have been professionally diagnosed with mechanical lower back pain – have found the most effective.

Katie says: “They are simple and proven exercises that require no expensive equipment or gym membership. A home exercise programme needs to be prescriptive but these exercises, if done correctly by carefully following the App’s uncomplicated advice and instructions, they work!

“The App also has the potential to save you time and money on unnecessary repeat physiotherapy appointments once you’ve been diagnosed. Sadly, waiting times for NHS physiotherapy can also be lengthy, so if your GP has referred you for treatment this App could help you to become more proactive by helping with self management of your backache.

“But the most important thing to remember is that this App does not replace qualified assessment, treatment and advice from a Chartered Physiotherapist and your General Medical Practitioner or Specialist. There are many causes of lower back pain and the source of the problem must be correctly diagnosed before attempting any kind of exercise programme.”

The DIY Physio Lower Back App is now available from the iTunes App Store for £1.49. It is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and requires iOS 4.3 or later.

For a short time my back pain readers can review this app for free ‘DIY Physio Lower Back App’ by using the following promotional code: NJLPXTYYXRE9(Expires December 15, 2011).

  1. A wide range of lower back pain treatments are available depending on the cause of the pain, its severity and for how long it will last. Whatever pain you have, it is and will always be subjective. Pain is not the same for all; it varies from person to person. Which is why doctor would mind asking you to rate your own pain, from 1 (less pain) to 10 (high pain) and the pain duration and causes.

  2. thank you for your comments. Before downloading the app it is made very clear that a diagnosis of mechanical back pain (MBP) must have been made by a qualified medical practitioner and/or Chartered Physiotherapist. This is primarily to exclude other pathology. It is well documented and considered that as long as the diagnosis of MBP has been made, it is beneficial to keep the back moving, and in particular build up local core stability for the spine.
