The question is which is it? Is the depression giving us chronic pain or is the chronic pain giving us depression.
Obviously its no surprise to read that people who suffer from chronic pain can also suffer from feeling depressed at times. But, they are now saying that some types of chronic pain appears to come from a pathway in the nervous system, which sends pain signals to the brain, even when the pain is not actually with us.
Its a vicious cycle of depression and pain which is difficult to break.
Recent studies looked at how psychological variables, such as depression and anxiety may be linked to the start of a back pain problem, rather than the other way round.
Some studies have shown that around 40% of patients tested experienced the onset of depression before the onset of pain, and 58% experienced it after the pain began.
It is a possibility that depression has increased the risk for developing back pain problems.
A fascinating subject….My ineterest in the ‘connection’ has always been from the ‘Depression’ view point….Working with ‘Depressives’….Psychosomatic ‘inter-play’ was always around…..;)x

That’s so true Bushka, it actually all makes sense in one respect. A bit of a viscious circle for some I’m sure, and to be honest with you I have been extremely lucky to have NOT suffered from it during my chronic pain life but I do have sympathy for others that suffer from depression. I have a friend I have looked after a couple of times when she has slipped into a deep depression. Hope your posts are up and running for everyone now 🙂

The thing is to realize when the depression is upon you and the way out of it and that is different for each person
