This is a guest post from fellow blogger Brandy Martin from Oklahoma City on ‘Gynecomastia surgery and its costs and ill effects. I am quite sure that many of you, like myself, will never have heard of this before.

What is Gynecomastia?
Many men with large breast suffer from a condition called gynecomastia. Simply put, gynecomastia refers to an excess of fat and/or glandular tissue in the breast area which does is not a direct result of obesity.

Gynecomastia affects almost two-thirds of boys over the age of 14 in the United States. Teen boys are especially susceptible to the condition because of the sudden onrush of sex hormones. Gynecomastia accounts for more than 65 percent of all male breast disorders.

Enlarged male breasts occur for unknown reasons. Some researchers and scientists associate it with decreasing levels of testosterone in the body. Others feel the condition could be symptomatic of diseases such as kidney failure, hyperthyroidism, and tumors.

Some medications and drugs, including heroin, cancer treatments, anti-anxiety medications, marijuana, and alcohol can also result in gynecomastia.

Symptoms of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia might be painful to some. The enlarged breasts can cause discomfort in the back and spine due to the extra weight of the breast. Many gynecomastia victims suffers from disparaging feelings of self-worth and have a tendency to withdraw from emotional and physical relationships with others due to their insecurity.

Temporary Relief for Gynecomastia
Those suffering from back pain due to the condition can do various back-related exercises such as lat pulldowns, face pulls, and back raises with weights to help strengthen the back muscles. Cat curls, which require one to get down on their hands and knees, face the ground and push the center of the spine all the way toward the ceiling, then back in, could also alleviate some back discomfort.

Wearing undergarments will help to hide the enlarged breast, and keep the breast tissue stiller during movement so the back is put under less pressure. An undershirt or undergarment made of spandex or spandex-like material is better at holding the breast still.

Treatment: Procedure and Gynecomastia Surgery Cost

Luckily, three-fourth of teen boys afflicted with this condition will have their breasts flatten out and return to normal within two years of the excess breast growth. A full 90 percent of boys afflicted with gynecomastia will have their chest flatten out within three years. For those boys and men whose condition doesn’t revert back to normal, gynecomastia surgery is an option.

A surgeon will simply create an incision underneath the nipple or along the underarm, then remove excess fat or glandular tissue through the incision. Some patients will need liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue.

Those who qualify for the surgery will need to participate in a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. The surgeon, in addition to answering questions about gynecomastia surgery cost and procedures, will perform a few tests, including a physical exam, to determine the cause of the enlarged breasts.

The cost of the surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, averages at about $3,000. This price includes the surgeon’s and hospital’s fee, the cost of anesthesia, and the price of any medication. The price will vary per surgeon and additional fees might be added for other services such as liposuction or scalpel surgery, which is not needed in all cases.

Disqualifiers for Gynecomastia Surgery
Drug abusers will not qualify for surgery. If you use non-prescription drugs, you won’t be considered a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery, cost and ability to pay notwithstanding. Also anyone suffering from obesity will be ineligible since their gynecomastia could be simply due to excess weight. Teen boys will only qualify for surgery after they have dealt with the condition for at least two years and the problem doesn’t seem to be receding on its own.

  1. Wow, pretty shocking article. You are right I have never heard of it. I see many men with big breasts but I am not sure that they know what they are suffering from. Usually they just hide it with big T-shirts.

Thank you for sharing, make it a great week.
