September is Pain Awareness Month. The very first Pain Awareness Month in America was held in 2001 and since then the event has gone from strength to strength.

They say that around 75 million Americans are suffering pain and they hope that the awareness month will highlight it to the health care community, policy makers, and the public at large about the issues of living with chronic pain.

There mission is to facilitate peer support and education for individuals with chronic pain and their families so that these individuals may live more fully in spite of their pain.

While reading about this awareness month I came across Invisible Awareness Week already happening between September 8th – 14th this awareness week started in 2002 and has gone from chat rooms to podcast conferences on Blog Talk Radio and even a video conference last year.

The Invisible Awareness Week exploded in 2012 through the social media with over 60,000 people watching their videos from their conference in 2012.

With two such successful campains in America isn’t it about time that the UK had a Pain Awareness Month? I’m sure there must be nearly as many UK residents that are also suffering from chronic pain and invisible illnesses.
