  1. Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work.
  2. In the UK, 2.5 million people have back pain every day of the year, at a cost of £12.3 billion.
  3. Back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.
  4. Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic—meaning they are NOT caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer. But rather poor posture and poor use of the body.
  5. Back pain is the number 2 reason for long term sickness in much of the UK.
  6. In manual labour jobs, back pain is the number one reason.
  7. Most people have lower back pain. This is because the lower back bears the weight of the upper body. It also twists and bends more than the upper back.
  8. Bending over backwards. The spine consists of 33 bony segments, the vertebrae. The discs lie between these. They are tough and spongy and work as shock absorbers, and give the spine flexibility – the spine can in fact bend far enough to form two-thirds of a circle.
  9. Experts estimate that as many as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.
  10. 80% of people over the age of 30 experience back problems of which 30% of those will have recurring problems.
  11. Back pain accounts for almost one fourth of all occupational injuries and illnesses.
  12. A survey of back patients revealed that 75% of those who were told they needed surgery recovered successfully without it.
  13. Back pain is the most frequent cause of activity limitation in people younger than 45 years old.
  14. Low back pain is also very costly: approximately 5 percent of people with back pain disability account for 75 percent of the costs associated with low back pain.
  15. Most acute back pain goes away on its own, whether or not you treat it with medication or other therapies.
  16. With conservative measures, the symptoms of low back pain typically show significant improvement within a few weeks from onset.
