This week on Sleep Sunday we are going to talk about how sleeping with a pillow between your legs can relieve pain.
When you’re dealing with pain, the sleep struggle is real. You’ve likely heard that sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs can help. Side sleepers often hitch their upper leg forward, which causes their hips and back to twist during the night. Adding a pillow between your legs can prevent your upper leg from moving forward and this can then reduces stress on your hips, back, and legs.
Sleeping with a pillow between your legs can help alleviate chronic pain in your back, hips, and neck. It can also improve posture by helping your spine stay aligned while you sleep. However, sleeping with a pillow between your legs can cause pain to worsen if there are underlying issues that require medical attention.
This sleep position has a ton of potential benefits, thanks to its role in keeping your spine aligned during the night. Good alignment helps relieve pressure on your back, neck, and hips. It can also help reduce pain from sciatica or a herniated disk. Research has shown that sleeping in difficult positions can structurally change the shape of the spine and throw it out of alignment.
In addition to easing pain, the pillow-between-the-legs position may improve your posture by helping your spine stay aligned while you sleep. This also supports overall spine health, so you can comfortably sit up straight during your waking hours.
When you sleep with a pillow between your legs, you allow your body to ease up on certain painful pressure areas. This may reduce discomfort caused by sciatica, a herniated disc, neck pain, or pregnancy-related pain. Maintaining good alignment can relieve some of the stress from the tissues in your back and may potentially reduce pain caused by a herniated disc or sciatica.
Sleeping with a pillow between your legs can also improve blood circulation. The slight elevation of putting a pillow between your legs will help facilitate blood flow through the vena cava, which is a major vein carrying blood to the heart and back.
If you find that sleeping with a pillow between your legs causes any type of pain or makes your pain worse then do not use this method.
