According to an article in Healio Rheumatology News more than 40% of patients with long covid report ‘Fibromyalgia like’ multi-site pain.
The data – the result of an observational retrospective database study of more than 50,000 patients with increased COVID symptoms – also showed that a high rate of participants reported opiate use.
Out of 1 million patients in the network who were diagnosed with COVID-19, about 52,000 demonstrated long COVID symptoms between 3 and 6 months following acute infection, the release said. Opioid use was observed in 36% of patients with multisite pain, compared with 19% of patients without multisite pain, according to the company. In addition, opioid use increased when fatigue (39%) or insomnia (50%) were present.

Fibromyalgia Resources also write that among patients who developed post-acute COVID-19(PACS) so-called “long COVID” – almost one-third reported clinical features of fibromyalgia. The study suggests that up to 30% of patients with PACS may satisfy the criteria for fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is not on the list of pre-existing conditions that appear to make COVID-19 more severe. However, some conditions that frequently overlap with fibromyalgia are autoimmune diseases like Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Sjogren’s syndrome. Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity are also included as risk factors.
