The wrong footwear can cause havoc to your spine and lead to back pain.
Each of our feet is composed of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The foot is is made to create and control movement. However when we cram our feet into tight and narrow footwear, we paralyze our feet froms its natural movement, altering the way we walk.
To avoid spinal problems there are a number of things to remember…
- If you walk or stand a lot during the day then always wear the proper shoes that provide adequate support. Look for cushioned slip-proof shoes.
- If you have flat feet or a high arch, it is even more important that you get shoes that support your feet well. You could try orthotics to help balance your feet.
- Avoid high heels as this will tilt your pelvis foward.
- Shoes, sneakers, and other footwear should feel comfortable and not pinch or irritate any part of your foot even when new.
- Shoes with a slight heel are best. The fact that your heels are slightly elevated allows your ankle to turn a little bit and rotate differently(something under 2 inches and never anything higher than that).
- Sandals and flip-flops don’t provide a lot of support. But special, orthopedic-style sandals are a good idea.
- Avoid flat types of loafers and ballerina-type shoes with a very flat sole, as these type of shoes will rotate your pelvis in a way that can worsen back pain.
