HEALTH AWARENESS DAYS/WEEKS/MONTH FOR OCTOBER…

Health Awareness Days/Weeks and for the Month of October this year are very busy with over awareness days taking place.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the 1st October – 31st October – Every October, people all over the world show their support for people affected by breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness website say ” work’s always important, but October is when we get to really shout about it.” For months, the coronavirus put many areas of breast cancer on pause. Now more than ever, they need people, communities and businesses across the UK to help them press play on breast cancer research and care.

From campaigningvolunteering and fundraising, to their life-changing care, support and world-class research – they are going all out to raise money, raise awareness and make sure people affected by breast cancer know we’re here for them. Check out the Breast Cancer Awareness Website for more details.

National Cholesterol Month October 1st – October 31st – Let’s Talk About Cholesterol this October to mark National Cholesterol Month.

HEART UK Chief Executive, Jules Payne says the cholesterol charity wants to have one million people involved in the campaign. Using the powers of social media HEART UK is running an ambitious awareness campaign to make people more aware of cholesterol and how to it can be best managed.

HEART UK say ” We all need some cholesterol in our bodies just to keep us ticking over, but having too much can clog up your arteries and lead to health problems in the future. By getting a simple cholesterol test and making positive lifestyle changes, most people can keep their cholesterol levels healthy. So, this National Cholesterol Month ‘Let’s Talk About Cholesterol‘.

The Great Cholesterol Challenge – If you are looking for a challenge this October, why not take on our “Great Cholesterol Challenge”*. Being active is a major part of looking after your cholesterol levels, keeping your heart healthy and helping to prevent heart disease. Lupus Awareness Month October 1st – October 31st – Lupus Awareness Month takes place during October in the UK every year. It is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the disease amongst the public and medical profession as well as improving the understanding of the impact that lupus can have.

By making people more aware of lupus you can help control its impact. They need your help to raise awareness of lupus, its symptoms and the effects it can have on people’s lives this Lupus Awareness Month.

You could ‘Adopt a Hospital’ for Lupus Awareness Month and beyond by ordering the Display Stand and Bookmarks for display in your local hospital, rheumatology/lupus clinic. They would encourage you to keep in touch with these locations and ensure that the stand is always on display and there is a sufficient supply of leaflets. Please also try to get some of these boards located in your local shops, libraries, bookstores and any other location. Each board comes with a supply of bookmarks so just stand it up and insert the bookmarks – it just might be a good idea to ask first. Or, you could try the 31-Mile Virtual Challenge – Take part in this fun new virtual challenge and help raise awareness during Lupus Awareness Month! The event takes place in October, and anyone can take part! Walk, run, wheelchair or cycle a total of 31 miles throughout the month by completing 1-mile a day or by taking on three 10.3-mile challenges! BackCare Awareness Week is 4th October – 8th October – BackCare say that “with the global pandemic in mind, the past two years have been extremely difficult for all, and as a result BackCare Awareness Week 2021 (4th to 8th October) will be paying particular attention to:

  • Working from Home
  • Studying at Home
  • Spending more time at Home

They say they have not forgotten those who are still working from offices, factories, schools, colleges, universities and hospitals too. BackCare Awareness Week 2021 has something for everyone.

National Bone and Joint Week takes place on the 12th October – 20th October – The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance explain about National Bone and Joint Week – “Every October, Bone and Joint Week helps get people thinking about one of the most widespread and pressing health issues of our times – musculoskeletal health. Now more than ever, good musculoskeletal health helps our wellbeing get back on track. As we rebuild our activity and how we work, eat and feel, having the best musculoskeletal health helps us live better. After more than a year of uncertainly, stress, inactivity, gym and swimming pool closures, weight gain and changed routines, many struggle with their physical and mental health.”

Supporting good musculoskeletal health facilitates better health and wellbeing for individuals, life goals, work, helps communities thrive, advances equality, can help painful conditions, reduces disability, helping people move more and keep well mentally.

Everyone can get involved in Bone and Joint Week, especially if you look after a community. World Mental Health Day is October 10th – Mental Health UK is partnering with ITN Productions Industry News to produce a news-style programme raising the profile of mental health in the UK, from those severely affected by mental illness, to people whose mental health has worsened during the current coronavirus crisis. They said “we’re extremely excited to share that the programme will be airing on 10 October 2021 to coincide with World Mental Health Day 2021. We can’t wait for you to see the film. In the meantime, you can watch an exclusive trailer of ‘Forward Together for Mental Health’ below.”

World Spine Day – October 16th – Taking place on October 16 each year, World Spine Day highlights the burden of spinal pain and disability around the world. With health professionals, exercise and rehabilitation experts, public health advocates, schoolchildren and patients all taking part, World Spine Day is celebrated on every continent.

World Spine Day highlights the importance of spinal health and well being. Promotion of physical activity, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions will all feature as people are encouraged to look after their spines and stay active.

World Spine Day say ” An estimated one billion people worldwide suffer with spinal pain. It affects people across the life course and is the biggest single cause of disability on the planet. Effective management and prevention is therefore key and this year’s World Spine Day will be encouraging people to take steps to be kind to their spines.

Populations in under-served parts of the world often have no access to conventional healthcare resources to care for spinal pain and disability. Dedicated spinal health professionals do not exist in many parts of the world, helping people to self-manage their conditions is important. Even in high-income countries, back pain afflicts many millions of people, resulting in an enormous impact on industry and the economy.

Restart A Heart Day takes place on October 15th – The Resuscitation Council say “It’s time to get hands on for Restart a Heart Day.In light of COVID-19, the steps you should take when performing CPR have changed – but the need to perform CPR has not. 

Out of hospital cardiac arrests are still happening across the UK, and by learning and performing CPR, you could be the difference between life and death for a loved one at home, a colleague at work, or a stranger in the street.

Restart a Heart 2021 will see some in-person events resume in the UK. Digital learning will still play a key role in ensuring that everyone has a chance to learn CPR and that those having a sudden cardiac arrest have their best chance of surviving.  

Whether you’ve learnt CPR before, or this is your first time, this is an opportunity to learn how CPR guidance has changed during COVID-19 and gain the skills and confidence to help if someone collapses and stops breathing normally. World Osteoporosis Day takes part on October 20th – World Osteoporosis Day (WOD), on October 20 each year, marks a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. WOD aims to make osteoporosis and fracture prevention a global health priority by reaching out to health-care professionals, the media, policy makers, patients, and the public at large. “TAKE ACTION FOR BONE HEALTH” as a headline, highlighting the need to be proactive in maintaining bone health throughout life, and preventing osteoporosis and fractures through early risk assessment and treatment if needed.

The campaign will also emphasize the direct link between osteoporosis (the silent, underlying disease) and broken bones, which have a serious, life-changing impact in terms of pain, disability and lost independence.

World Osteoporosis say the key messages of World Osteoporosis Day 2021 are –

  • Osteoporosis is the underlying cause of painful, debilitating and life-threatening broken bones – known as fragility fractures.
  • Osteoporosis is a growing global problem: worldwide, fractures affect one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50.
  • Osteoporosis affects families – family members often bear the burden of care
  • If one of your parents had osteoporosis or hip fracture, this may increase your own risk of developing the disease. Take the IOF Osteoporosis Risk Check to identify your risk factors.
  • At risk? Be sure to request a bone health assessment – take early action for prevention!
  • Bone health concerns the entire family – ensure your family maintains a bone healthy lifestyle.
  • Advocate! Sign the IOF Global Patient Charter and join us in calling on healthcare providers to close the massive ‘care gap’ which leaves many patients unprotected against a cycle of disabling fractures.

Breast Cancer Now Wear It Pink Day takes place on October 23rd – On Friday 22 October 2021, they will wear pink. Raise money. And help make life-saving breast cancer research and life-changing care happen.

If there ever was a time to put on that pink top, proudly drape that pink feather boa around your neck or pull up those pink socks, it’s now.

Breast Cancer Now’s wear it pink day is one of the biggest fundraising events in the UK. Taking place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, thousands of amazing people wear it pink in their communities, schools or work places for the UK’s largest breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now.

2021 is the 20th year that they will all be wearing it pink, with over £36 million raised since 2002. Together, we can go even further and raise even more money for the people affected by this disease.

Since March 2020, the doors to hundreds of our community support events have had to close and our researchers were kept out of their labs for 100 days or more.

That’s why we’ve only become more determined to make sure we’re there to support people when they need us. And more determined to make the breakthroughs in research that will continue to drive forward progress.

People affected by breast cancer need us – and they need you too. That’s why we need you to wear pink, raise money, and help make life-changing research and care happen.

OVER THIRTEEN HEALTH RELATED AWARENESS DAYS, WEEKS AND FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2021…

During the month of May there are over thirteen health related awareness days as well as weeks and awareness for month of May. I will try and cover each of the list below throughout this month and May to keep you up to date with the latest news.

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day on May 15th – This year’s theme is spinal cord injury at any age. Post it on Twitter or Facebook and don’t forget to add #LivingWithSCI. Aspire – supporting people with spinal injury.

World Red Cross Day May 8th and British Red Cross Week May 4th-9th – The BRC have made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone all planned public collections activity this year. This comes after carefully considering the risks of Covid-19 (coronavirus) on the health, safety and wellbeing of our amazing volunteer collectors and generous donors. However you can still help raise awareness by becoming a virtual bucket shaker means that you can still collect donations, bring your community together and raise vital funds for people in crisis. International ME Awareness Day May 12th and ME Awareness Week May 11th-17th – Centred on ME Awareness Day on May 12th, ME Awareness Week is a time when everyone we know puts all their valuable energy into telling the world that M.E. is a real and physical disease. Go Blue 4 ME, one of the ME Association’s most successful regular fundraising campaigns, will run again in 2020. It will be held during ME Awareness Week in May: Monday, May 11 – Sunday, May 17.

World Fibromyalgia Awareness Day May 12th and Fibromyalgia Awareness Month for May 1st-30th – May is the month we all come together to educate and raise awareness about Fibromyalgia with friends and family, at work, and in our neighborhoods. Take part to share the facts, and make a difference for all those impacted by Fibromyalgia, #SupportFibro. Fibromyalgia Awareness Day is May 12th and World Lupus Day is May 10th. Get ready to turn the month of May purple!

World Lupus Day May 10th, Lupus is a complicated condition which is still very poorly understood by the public and many within the medical profession. There are many ways that you can help to raise awareness of lupus within the community just head to the World Lupus Day website.

Arthritis Care Awareness Week May 14th-21st, Arthritis Care Awareness Week is a UK based event which raises awareness about arthritis, gathers support for people with this condition, and highlights the work of Arthritis Care, a charity which supports this event. Arthritis is a condition marked by painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. There are many types of arthritis which can affect a person in different ways. International Nurses Day May 12th, International Nurses Day (IND) is observed around the world May 12 (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth in 1820). The day is set aside to honor and note the many contributions nurses make to society. Nurses care for our loved ones at some of the most challenging times of their lives. Use #InternationalNursesDay or #VoiceToLead to share on social media.

Make May Purple/Action on Stroke Month May 1st-30th, Make May Purple is our Stroke Association fundraising and awareness campaign that coincides with National Stroke Awareness month – May. Whatever you do, don’t forget to tag the Stroke Association on social media using #MakeMayPurple and let us know what you’re up to!
