Massage can bebut some very relaxing and some can work better than others. There are a number of different types of massage. Here’s a list of them…

  1. Chair Massage – this can be very handy if you cannot get out for a massage. It is performed fully clothed by a professional for instant stress relief. This is an efficient way to unwind especially effective for shoulder tensions.
  2. Trigger Point Massage – trigger point massage is a form of bodywork that focuses on identifying knots in your muscles and then breaking them up, or releasing them, by bringing fresh blood to the area. This type of massage is particularly popular among those who suffer from chronic pain. You don’t usually need to strip down for the session, though lightweight clothing is recommended.
  3. Aromatherapy Massage – During an aromatherapy massage, essential oils may be applied directly to the skin or simply diffused into the air—either way, the idea is that these oils have benefits when it comes to relaxation, mood and pain management.
  4. Sports Massage – The masseuse typically uses a combination of multiple techniques (stroking, kneading, compression and trigger points, to name a few) to improve joint range of motion and flexibility while reducing muscle tension. 
  5. Thai Massage – Thai massage is distinct from the rest in that it combines yoga-like body positioning with massage techniques. The end result is a far more participatory massage experience that involves stretching and movement, in addition to pressure being applied to certain areas of the body. Thai massage can help reduce back pain, increase joint mobility and relieve headaches.
  6. Reflexology – Reflexology is a type of massage that revolves around the traditional Chinese belief that certain pressure points in the hands, feet and ears correspond to other organs in the body. It can be an effective way to ease stress and anxiety.
  7. Deep Tissue Massage – Deep tissue massage involves applying considerably more pressure than Swedish massage in order to target the inner layers of muscle tissue. It can reduce muscle tension and considerable relief for those who suffer from chronic pain.
  8. Shiatsu Massage – This form of traditional Japanese bodywork involves using the fingers, thumbs, palms and sometimes elbows to apply relatively deep pressure to specific areas in an effort to reduce tension and improve blood flow. It has a wide range of health benefits, inluding alleviating lower back pain.
  9. Hot Stone Massage – This moderate pressure massage therapy combines Swedish massage techniques with the use of heated volcanic stones to improve blood circulation and ease pain. This massage might involve both hot and cold stones and is designed to reduce pain, ease muscle tension and promote a general sense of well-being. 
  10. Swedish Massage – The Swedish massage relies on a variety of techniques—effleurage, percussion and kneading, among others—to relieve tension, improve blood circulation and give your mood a boost.

HOT STONE MASSAGE – ANOTHER TYPE OF MASSAGE TO HELP WITH PAIN…

Following on from my post Why We Should All Take Time for a Massage, why not try another type of massage called a Hot Stone Massage.

A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy. It’s used to help you relax and ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body.

Hot stone therapy is a professional massage that uses smooth, flat, heated basalt stones that are placed along your spine, in the palms of your hands, along your legs and between the toes. Basalt stones are used for massage as they have a rich iron content that retains heat. Cold marble stones are often used in the treatment to help aid with detoxing and healing the body. Before treatment, the rocks are heated in a professional heater to 110°F to 145°F.

The main difference between a hot stone massage and a regular massage is that the focal point of a hot stone massage is the use of stones to apply pressure during the massage therapy session to promote relaxation. Regular massages do not use stones to massage the body but instead focus on pressure points and muscles. In a regular massage, the massage therapist uses pressure from their hands to massage different areas of the body.

Some GP’s recommend it for the treatment of arthritis, fibromyalgia and hypertension. They say it may also help with the symptoms of anxiety and depression and it can help with stress by releasing muscle tensions. Other symptoms it can help with are blood circulation, promoting better sleep, and of course releiving pain.

It is said that a 60 minute massage is about the same as 8 hours of sleep to your body.

WHY WE SHOULD ALL MAKE TIME FOR A MASSAGE…

Research has revealed that massage has various health benefits. Massage treatments can be utilized to assist with dealing with things like nervousness and sorrow, sleep deprivation, and bad posture.

Aromatherapy massage in particular is very popular for pain release. Aromatherapy is a combination of two words “aroma” which means smell or fragrance, and ‘therapy” which means treatment for the body, mind, or social condition of a person, to assist a process where healing and change can take place. People who are suffering from problems such as arthritis, or fibromyalgia can benefit from the service of therapist to improve their quality of life.

Massage is one of the most important activities that help people to recuperate from injuries. Wounds are converted into scar tissues hampering the movement of the body. Over a period of time, the muscles acquire strength and the healing occurs at a faster rate.

It is a method of healing using very concentrated essential oils that are often highly aromatic and are extracted from plants. On a personal note, I do find that aromatherapy massage helps with pain relief be it only for a short period of time. Some say that it’s a placebo effect but I do genuinely feel in less pain and more calm. Let’s put it this way, if I could afford a massage on a weekly basis I would have it booked in a second but once a month is a help to me for the time being.

Massage has so many benefits from relieving stress, anxiety, depression and helping you sleep better. It can help with chronic fatigue, give pain relief, and can boost your immune system. It can also improve your posture and relieve headaches and can be done on yourself or by using a massage gun or having treatment. I find massaging acupressure points of great benefit to me although I can obviously not reach certain areas.

A great home massage tip is to use a tennis ball, which can help with back and other muscle pains.

For self-massage, they suggest that you lie on a mat with two tennis balls under your back, and roll up and down. The balls then massage the muscles and ligaments around your spine. This then stretches the muscles and surrounding tissue, increasing blood flow and nutrients to the area to help ease the pain.

For specific acupressure using your tennis ball lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor or sofa if you cannot get onto the floor. Your knees should be separated by about the width of your hips. Then raise your hips slightly and slide the tennis ball under one of them. Come back down and rest on the ball. You can treat both sides of your body and the sides of your hips.
